She grew up on West End Avenue on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, just like Dan Humphrey, and can’t remember ever wanting to do anything else but write—just like Dan. She attended the same small, private all-girls, uniforms-required school on the Upper East Side—just like Constance Billard—from first grade through high school. An A+ student in English and a C student in everything else, she loved literature and writing and was encouraged to write more outside of class by her English teachers.

Unlike Blair Waldorf, Cecily scored abysmally on her SATs and went on to study at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she majored in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Cecily became a Colby Senior Scholar and wrote a collection of short stories and poetry called “Bleeding” which is still available on a shelf in the college library, although Cecily sincerely hopes that no one will ever find it.

Cecily has many favorite books, but the three that score highest on her list, the ones that she rereads often and thinks of as personal friends are: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Age of Innocence, by Edith Wharton, and Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger. To aspiring writers, Cecily recommends writing a short story before trying to write a book because at least you know you’ll probably get to the end of a story, and if it keeps getting longer and turns into a book, then congratulations, you’ve written a book!

After college Cecily traveled and held odd jobs in places like Budapest, Hungary and London, England, marrying an English boy in London along the way. She then returned to New York City, where she became an editor for Alloy Entertainment. It was there that she wrote the proposal for a new book series called Gossip Girl and was thrilled to be asked by the publisher to write the series herself. After finishing the manuscript for the second book, she had a baby girl. Two years and four books later, she had a baby boy. These days Cecily and her family reside in Brooklyn with two Cornish Rex cats and a West Highland White Terrier who sleep in her lap or at her feet while she attempts to write The Next Big Thing.

Cecily is a vegetarian but sometimes eats unsmelly white fish if it has no skin or eyeballs or whiskers. She usually wears J-Brand high-waist skinny jeans, clog boots, a v-neck top, and a black sheepskin biker jacket from Topshop. She has recently cut her long blond hair very short so that people won’t mix her up with Serena van der Woodsen, although that hardly ever happens because Serena is very tall and Cecily is very short. Despite the similarities between her and some of her characters, Cecily wants you to know that Gossip Girl is completely fictional and not at all true. It’s just a story she made up and wrote down.
